The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Rail Division has released a study examining the potential impact of reestablishing passenger rail service between Salisbury and Asheville. The report highlights how the corridor could improve regional connectivity and support economic development in Western North Carolina.
The Western North Carolina Rail Corridor Economic Impact Report projects that the proposed passenger rail line could strengthen local economies by connecting the Charlotte metropolitan area, the Piedmont Triad, the Research Triangle, and the Blue Ridge region. NCDOT Rail Division Director Jason Orthner said the corridor offers an opportunity to improve regional connectivity, support local economies, and enhance the state’s transportation system.
The report estimates that the rail project could generate 5,270 jobs annually during construction, with $360.5 million in wages, $1.05 billion in economic output, and $33.6 million in state and local tax revenue. After construction, the corridor is projected to support approximately 200 ongoing jobs and contribute additional annual employee earnings and economic output.
The report notes that funding for the proposed rail project has not yet been secured. Meanwhile, NCDOT encourages residents to continue using current NC By Train services, which offer large seats, seat-side charging outlets, free WiFi, and discounts for children, students, veterans, and seniors.
