After weeks of a snow-covered landscape, New York City drivers are gearing up for the return of alternate side parking rules starting Thursday. The suspension, which had been in place since a severe storm on January 26 left the streets buried, will end, requiring residents to move their vehicles to allow for street cleaning. According to Gothamist, this will be the first movement of cars for many who have seen their vehicles encased in snow and ice for nearly a month.
The Department of Transportation has confirmed that these measures are necessary to clean up the accumulated waste and debris. Nick Benson, a spokesperson for the department, highlighted that the parking rules were previously suspended not just because of the snow but also due to a series of holidays, including Presidents Day, the Lunar New Year, and Ash Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Department of Sanitation has taken proactive steps, bringing in special trucks to melt the persisting ice. Drivers are being reminded to be vigilant and move their vehicles to avoid penalties, as roads have been dangerously narrowed for weeks, reported ABC7 New York.
With the forecast pointing towards more manageable temperatures, it's expected that the challenges of impassable streets and frozen rubbish may soon be behind city residents.
