The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said Thursday it was handling a shooting death investigation in the 25000 block of De Wolfe Road in Newhall, Santa Clarita, tied to a chaotic Halloween house party where two people were shot. One man was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The department’s latest update, issued months after the October 31 incident, is being framed as a release of new details in the case.

In a post on X, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that the Homicide Bureau had “responded to a shooting death investigation” at the Newhall address and attached an incident transcript indicating that an arrest was made in connection with the case, according to the LA County Sheriff's Department. The post used the shorthand “*UPD*” and offered little additional public information.

Deputies were first called to the 25000 block of De Wolfe Road at about 11:24 p.m. on October 31 for reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, and investigators say the gunfire broke out after a fight at a large Halloween party, as reported by ABC7. At the scene, deputies found two victims: one adult man who died at the location and a 27-year-old man who was taken to a trauma center in critical condition.

The Los Angeles County coroner later identified the man who was killed as 29-year-old Elijah Harts of Newhall, according to reporting by MyNewsLA. Authorities had previously said that two male suspects were last seen running away from the area in an unknown direction and that the investigation was still active.

Investigation and arrest

According to the department, the incident report attached to the X post documents an arrest in the case, although LASD has not released the suspect’s name or specified any charges. Detectives with the Homicide Bureau are continuing to review evidence and interview witnesses as the investigation moves forward.

Neighbors and evidence

Local coverage showed video of emergency crews at the scene and partygoers leaving the neighborhood while deputies and medics worked, as reported by FOX11. Investigators said they were gathering surveillance footage, cellphone video, and witness statements in an effort to identify any additional suspects and back up accounts of what happened.

Officials stress that an arrest does not equal a conviction. Prosecutors with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office would still need to file formal charges and present their case in court, and any charges will be announced publicly if and when they are filed.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477, according to local reporting by SCVNews. Tips can also be sent anonymously through the P3 Tips app or online at lacrimestoppers.org.
