North Carolina's been hit with back-to-back winter storms, leaving a white blanket across our roads. The N.C Department of Transportation is hard at work, and they've got a system to tackle the stubborn snow and ice. First up, the interstates and major highways get the royal treatment with salt and plows, next in line are U.S. and state routes,, and finally, those secondary roads will see some love. But the crews won't clock out until they've scrubbed every bit of winter off the asphalt, according to NCDOT Now.
Meanwhile, commuters and businesses along Dickinson Avenue in Pitt County can breathe a sigh of relief as it swings its lanes open once again. Thanks to some fresh storm drainage upgrades, cars are rolling between Memorial Drive and Reade Circle. There's still a bit of work to finish off though, sidewalks, greenery, plus the final surface coat and stripes are on the docket. Heads up, though: keep your eyes peeled for those crews and any shifts in your usual traffic dance.
Looking further down the track, there's talk of a new NC By Train passenger route that could stitch Salisbury to Asheville. It's all about giving folks a different way to travel, beefing up tourism, and giving the economy a little nudge. It's not quite at the station though, with no secured funding or scheduled departure date yet, based on details from NCDOT Now.
Don't overlook this one - North Carolina organizations have until Feb. 20 to snag some free bicycle helmets courtesy of the NCDOT. It's part of their annual drive to encourage safe biking and slash head injury stats among kids. For those hoping to get in on this protective gear giveaway, you can apply on the Bicycle Helmet Initiative page.
