The heat of competition was simmering on Valentine's Day at the 15th Annual Pete Soto Chili Cook-off, where North Olmsted Police Department's very own Detective Lieutenant Beck brought the spice with a "traditional" chili recipe. In a friendly yet fiery contest of culinary skills, the event not only stirred the pots of rivalry but also raised funds for a laudable cause—the Lorain County Blue Foundation. Despite their best efforts, the NOPD had to settle for second place for the second consecutive year, as announced in a social media post by the North Olmsted Police Department.
While they didn't snag the top spot, the NOPD acknowledged the winners with good sportsmanship, noting that the Vermilion Police won the event with a "non-traditional" chili made of triple bacon and double-smoked chicken in a creamy white base. Described as "delicious" by the runners-up, it seems the taste buds of the judges were tantalized by the innovative approach to the chili spectrum. Even though the NOPD officers didn't return with a trophy, their participation ensured that the department gathered some "great equipment for our NOPD Officers," according to the NOPD on their online missive.
The Pete Soto Chili Cook-off has become a Valentine's Day staple for the Lorain County community, blending local law enforcement camaraderie with charitable generosity, as departments put forth their best chili concoctions hoping to win the hearts and palates of the attendees. The event serves as more than just a competition; it is a tribute to Pete Soto, a former officer who was injured in the line of duty, and it continues to support the Blue Foundation, which aids officers and their families in times of need.
