SAFFE officers on a proactive patrol near North Star Mall on Wednesday evening recovered a stolen vehicle and a firearm, ending the stop with two people in handcuffs and a third suspect still on the run. Police said the driver and a back-seat passenger were arrested at the scene, while a third juvenile suspect has been identified but remains at large. Officers told reporters the patrols were stepped up in response to a recent rise in vehicle burglaries on the North Side. No injuries were reported.
Officers Intercept Stolen Vehicle
According to SAFFE officers Talamas and Richardson, the pair spotted the stolen car, moved in, seized a handgun and detained two occupants before the scene was secured. The driver was identified as 17-year-old Jesus Rodriguez and the passenger as 18-year-old Joshua Zane Williams. Rodriguez faces charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and unlawful carrying of a weapon, while Williams was booked on an evading-arrest charge that the station notes comes on top of a prior conviction. A third juvenile suspect has been identified and is still being sought by investigators, and the case remains active, as reported by WOAI.
North Star's Recent Security Concerns
The North Star Mall area has already been on SAPD's radar after a run of thefts and a December armed-robbery incident that drew a large police response. That episode, along with a string of vehicle-targeted crimes across the North Side, has led merchants and shoppers to push for a stronger and more visible police presence in the area, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Why SAFFE Was Patrolling
SAFFE, short for San Antonio Fear Free Environment, is a problem-focused, community-oriented patrol unit that gives officers time to work repeat trouble spots instead of only jumping from one 911 call to the next. Coverage of the unit's community-policing approach helps explain why SAPD turns to SAFFE officers for targeted patrols when property and vehicle crimes start climbing in a neighborhood, per San Antonio Report.
How To Report Tips
SAPD says the investigation is ongoing and is asking anyone with information to contact the department. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867) or through the P3 Tips app. Crime Stoppers outlines how anonymous tips work and who might be eligible for rewards on its website, which investigators sometimes use to gather leads from the public, per Crime Stoppers San Antonio.
Officers described the recovery as a safe resolution to a potentially dangerous incident and said they plan to continue concentrated patrols on the North Side. For the station's initial rundown of the arrests and the evidence seized, see the original report by WOAI.
