A fast-moving fire tore through a single-story house on San Antonio’s Northeast Side on Monday afternoon, leaving the home badly damaged but, thankfully, everyone accounted for and no injuries reported. Neighbors gathered on the street as firefighters battled flames shooting from the attic.
Crews rushed to the 14000 block of Sunny Glen near Nacogdoches Road after calls came in around 1:30 p.m., and the San Antonio Fire Department sent 16 units to the scene, according to KENS5. Firefighters arrived to find flames already venting from the attic, and officials said the house was heavily damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
What firefighters were up against
Fire crews had to contend with heavy smoke and an attic fire that made it tough to get inside safely, forcing them to shift into defensive mode. With conditions deteriorating overhead, firefighters used ladder trucks and ventilation tactics to slow the spread of the flames and shield neighboring homes while crews focused on knocking down the main body of the fire.
Investigation ongoing
The San Antonio Fire Department said investigators were called out to determine what sparked the blaze, per KENS5. Officials have not yet released a damage estimate or additional information about the people who live in the home, beyond confirming that no injuries were reported to responders.
How neighbors can stay safe
Fire officials regularly urge residents to test smoke alarms every month, keep hallways and exits clear for quick escape, and call 911 right away at the first sign of smoke or flames. After a residential fire, anyone displaced or in need of short-term help is typically directed to the Red Cross or city emergency services for assistance.
Authorities have asked anyone who captured photos or video of the fire to share them with investigators as they work to piece together what happened. This story will be updated if the San Antonio Fire Department releases additional details.
