Escalating tensions in Portland have led Oregon lawmakers to take a firm stance against the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) use of federal agents in the city. After weekend events that saw agents employing tear gas, pepper balls, rubber bullets, and flash-bang grenades against crowds, including labor groups and their families, senators and representatives from Oregon have demanded a withdrawal of federal forces. In a letter addressed to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, the officials conveyed their shock at the aggressive actions taken against civilians, as reported by Sen. Ron Wyden's official website.
In their communication, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, and U.S. Reps. Suzanne Bonamici, Andrea Salinas, Janelle Bynum, and Maxine Dexter expressed dismay over the force deployed. "We and our constituents watched in horror as federal agents aggressively tear-gassed children and elderly members of the community," they wrote, emphasizing that the community members attacked were nonviolent and their civil liberties were at stake. The lawmakers highlighted the use of force as not only excessive but also deadly, referring to tragic events in Minneapolis where two citizens were killed and the deaths of immigrants in DHS custody, per Sen. Ron Wyden's official website.
The group of Oregon lawmakers detailed their concerns further, arguing that the continued actions of DHS had no lawful justification and that the federal agents' presence had prompted fear in communities that should be instead protected by their government. "We firmly oppose the actions of federal agents using deadly force against the very people they are sworn to protect and serve, and so should you," stated the letter, per Sen. Ron Wyden's Office. This sentiment echoes a growing concern amongst citizens and officials alike regarding the federal government's response and its compatibility with upholding constitutional rights.
Emphasizing their responsibility to their constituents, Wyden, Merkley, Bonamici, Salinas, Bynum, and Dexter asserted their commitment to ensuring safety and protecting the rights of Oregonians, including immigrant populations, who have felt increasingly targeted during this administration's tenure. "No one in our community should live in fear of federal agents attacking them on their streets as punishment for exercising their constitutional rights," the lawmakers concluded in their stance against DHS's actions, vowing to utilize every available resource to safeguard community members in Oregon, as cited by Sen. Ron Wyden's Office.
