Orlando’s 90-year-old Camping World Stadium is in the middle of a $400 million glow-up that will touch nearly every corner of the building and push permanent seating into the mid-60,000s. City and stadium officials say the multi-phase revamp is designed to modernize the upper bowls, layer in new premium experiences and overhaul building systems so the venue can stay in the hunt for mega-concerts, international soccer matches and even NFL games. Construction work is already visible around parts of the complex, and the plan is to keep events rolling while the years-long upgrade unfolds.
According to the stadium’s project page, the $400 million program is funded with Orange County tourist-development tax dollars and will add roughly 2,000 permanent seats, bringing seated capacity to about 65,000, while swapping out upper-level benches for chairbacks and rebuilding key infrastructure, officials say. The work is being broken into phases so many events can stay on the calendar during construction, per Camping World Stadium.
What's changing at the stadium
City-issued renderings show a flowing metallic skin wrapping the bowl and a programmable LED lighting package that can bathe the exterior in color and create a nighttime “lampshade” effect, all while hiding required hurricane bracing. Architects are also planning a retractable stage pocket to clean up concert sightlines, new gate layouts to ease those shoulder-to-shoulder entry jams, and rebuilt suites and premium areas. Those design details surfaced in project coverage and architect presentations, as reported by Sports Business Journal. The Barton Malow–AECOM Hunt joint venture has been tapped as construction manager for the job, according to Barton Malow.
Money, timeline and neighbors
The county’s tourist-development tax is the main piggy bank for the overhaul, and local leaders have argued the investment is necessary to keep Orlando competitive for major events, per Florida Citrus Sports. Project officials say the heavy construction is scheduled to roll out in phases beginning in late 2025 and wrap by summer 2027, with the staging deliberately planned to preserve as many booked events as possible. Local coverage has highlighted city-led community meetings where staff walked neighbors through expected road closures, traffic plans and construction impacts, including possible work along Church Street and Rio Grande Avenue, according to WESH.
What it could mean for sports and concerts
Officials say the upgrades are aimed at reeling in larger touring acts and marquee international sports events, and they argue the revamped building could be ready for NFL regular-season games if needed. Local leaders have even floated incentives to lure the Jacksonville Jaguars to Orlando while Jacksonville’s own stadium undergoes renovation. ESPN Southwest Florida reported on county proposals to support a potential Jaguars relocation for the 2027 season. The stadium’s internal planning documents highlight the economic punch from previous blockbusters, including WrestleMania and Electric Daisy Carnival, as part of the case for pouring new money into the venue, according to Camping World Stadium.
WFTV reported that the renovation package is wide-ranging but suggested a speedier finish, telling viewers the work would be done “by next summer,” a timeline that does not match the 2027 wrap date officials have laid out. WFTV also noted that the project is being sequenced in phases so the stadium can keep hosting games and concerts even as crews peel back and rebuild much of the 90-year-old structure.
