An overnight crash on Interstate 35 near West Cesar Chavez Boulevard left one person dead early Friday, turning a downtown construction zone into a fatal scene as first responders rushed to the area around 1 a.m., according to police.
As reported by WOAI, construction workers were in the main lanes at the time of the collision, and San Antonio police are still working to figure out exactly how the crash unfolded. Officials had not released the identity of the person killed as of early Friday.
I-35 Downtown Repairs And Work Zones
The deadly crash happened in a stretch of I‑35 that has already been squeezed by an ongoing repair project, where lanes are closed from Martin Street to Cesar Chavez Boulevard as part of a $25.9 million joint repair effort on downtown I‑35 and I‑10. KSAT reported extended lane reductions and 24‑hour closures in the area while crews continue the work.
Risks For Workers And Commuters
The combination of narrowed lanes, overnight construction and reduced visibility can raise the stakes for both drivers and road crews. MySA has followed the downtown I‑35 and I‑10 construction, highlighting ramp closures and traffic advisories and urging drivers to plan alternate routes whenever possible.
Investigation Ongoing
San Antonio police told WOAI that investigators are working to piece together the sequence of events and are asking anyone with information to contact SAPD. No charges had been filed and no additional details had been released early Friday.
