The Friday morning commute on the southbound 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles ground to a halt after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash near Adams Boulevard around 6:20 a.m., authorities said. Emergency crews blocked multiple lanes to investigate, and witnesses reported several passenger vehicles stopped at the scene alongside the motorcycle.
Crash details and road closures
The collision was logged at about 6:20 a.m. at Adams Boulevard in the California Highway Patrol's traffic records, according to ABC7 Los Angeles. The station reported that the crash involved three cars in addition to the motorcycle, and that one vehicle described by witnesses as a box truck left the scene. Most southbound lanes were shut down and were expected to remain closed for at least an hour while crews cleared debris and investigators worked on the freeway.
Possible hit-and-run carries criminal penalties
If investigators confirm that a driver left the scene, that person could face felony charges under state law. Under California Vehicle Code section 20001, a motorist who flees an accident that causes injury or death can face state prison time and fines, according to California Legislative Information. The law also allows for stiffer penalties when a crash results in serious injury or a fatality.
Investigation ongoing; witnesses sought
California Highway Patrol officers are leading the investigation, and authorities had not publicly released the rider's identity as of the initial reports, ABC7 Los Angeles noted. Anyone who has dash-cam or other video from the area around Adams Boulevard early Friday morning is being asked to contact CHP to assist with the investigation. We will update this story as officials release more information.
