Two people were killed early Wednesday when a white sedan rolled over on the southbound 405 near Westchester, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crash shut the southbound freeway for hours and choked the Westside morning commute as emergency crews worked the scene.
Fire crews were dispatched at about 2:03 a.m. to the single-vehicle rollover on the southbound 405, where two patients were determined dead at the scene, the department stated. The alert directed media inquiries to the California Highway Patrol incident log and included a map outlining the closure.
Freeway Closure And Traffic Impacts
According to Caltrans QuickMap, southbound lanes of the 405 through Westchester were closed during the early morning while tow operators and investigators worked the wreck. The shutdown triggered heavy backups that spilled onto Sepulveda Boulevard and other surface streets as drivers tried to divert around the closure. Officials urged motorists to stay clear of the area until lanes were reopened.
Investigation And Next Steps
The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation, and officials have not released the names of the deceased. The Los Angeles Fire Department post on X read "Westchester Traffic - Fatalities Sb 405 Fy" and included links to a map and incident details, with media directed to CHP Log #267 for follow-up. We will update this story when CHP or the Los Angeles County medical examiner releases additional information.
