A pre-dawn carjacking in the northeast Las Vegas Valley turned into a high-speed chase early Thursday, ending with a disabled car, one person in cuffs, and a major intersection shut down for hours.
Las Vegas Metro police said officers were called just after 4:50 a.m. to the 6000 block of Strong Bow Drive on a report that someone with a gun had taken a vehicle. While heading to the scene, officers spotted a car matching the description of the stolen vehicle and tried to pull it over. The driver took off instead, kicking off a pursuit through the area.
Police used what they described as pursuit-termination tactics to stop the fleeing vehicle near Nellis Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue. The car was disabled, the chase ended, and officers arrested the suspect. That person was later taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons following the arrest. Metro said there were no crashes reported during the incident, although Nellis remained closed at Cheyenne as crews worked the scene.
What police say
According to News 3 Las Vegas, officers first spotted the stolen vehicle while responding to the carjacking call and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver kept going at a high rate of speed, which prompted the full-on pursuit.
News 3 Las Vegas reports that Metro officers used "pursuit termination tactics" to disable the vehicle in the area of Nellis and Cheyenne, where a suspect was taken into custody. The outlet also notes the individual was transported to a hospital after the arrest for evaluation.
Traffic and scene
KTNV reported that both northbound and southbound lanes of Nellis at Cheyenne were shut down as officers secured the scene and investigators documented the aftermath of the chase. Drivers were urged to steer clear of the intersection while crews remained in the area.
KTNV also noted that the initial call came from the 6000 block of Strong Bow Drive and that there were no reported accidents tied to the pursuit.
Details still limited
Metro has not yet released the suspect’s name or any charging information, according to News 3 Las Vegas. Investigators are still working the case, and officials had not shared any additional details about a possible weapon or other potential victims as of Thursday morning.
