A usually calm stretch of North Pueblo turned into an active crime scene Thursday after a shooting in the 1800 block of North Queens left one person injured and sent police fanning out through the neighborhood in search of a suspect.
Initial reports indicated the victim was still alive as officers arrived. Neighbors watched as patrol cars flooded the area and officers canvassed for witnesses and clues. As of the latest updates, investigators had not released a suspect description or any details about a possible motive.
Police response and search
Officers with the Pueblo Police Department responded to the scene and launched an active search for the shooter, according to KRDO. The outlet reports that one person was shot and remained alive as emergency crews and detectives worked the area, with only limited information available in the early going. KRDO crews were headed to the neighborhood for on-the-ground coverage.
Where it happened
The gunfire was reported in the 1800 block of North Queens on the city's north side, a spot residents say is generally quiet and off most people’s radar. In recent years, the Pueblo Police Department has invested in a Real-Time Crime Center and ShotSpotter sensors to speed up responses to gunfire, according to the City of Pueblo. When shootings occur, officials typically urge anyone with home-surveillance or dash-cam footage to hang on to it and share it with investigators.
Recent trend of violence
Thursday's shooting comes on the heels of several high-profile incidents that have kept violence in the public conversation. On Feb. 7, a homicide at a Days Inn led to an arrest, as reported by KJCT. Local outlets have also tracked a series of nonfatal shootings and a Jan. 26 car chase that ended with one person suffering life-threatening injuries, previously covered by KRDO. Together, the cases have kept public safety officials and community groups focused on curbing gun violence in neighborhoods feeling the strain.
How to help
Pueblo Police are asking anyone with information, photos or video tied to the North Queens shooting to contact the department. Contact details and press releases are available on the agency’s police news page through the City of Pueblo. This story will be updated as authorities release additional details.
In the meantime, residents are urged to follow officers’ instructions near the scene and steer clear of blocked-off streets until police clear the area.
