The National Weather Service in Raleigh, North Carolina has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for central North Carolina, effective from 6 p.m. this evening to 10 a.m. Thursday. The advisory warns of mixed precipitation, with expected snow accumulations up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze, which could lead to slippery conditions and travel disruptions.
Raleigh is currently overcast with temperatures around 38°F and calm winds. Rain is likely to begin after 4 p.m., with an 80 percent chance of precipitation. In the late afternoon and evening, rain is forecast to change to light snow and freezing rain across the Piedmont Triad, particularly east along and north of Interstate 85. Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall, creating hazardous conditions on roads, including bridges and overpasses.
The Winter Weather Advisory covers multiple counties, including Person, Granville, and Vance, and extends to cities such as Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Durham. Residents are advised to prepare for slick roads, drive cautiously, and take care when walking on potentially icy stairs, sidewalks, and driveways to prevent falls and injuries, according to the NWS.
After the advisory period, there is a slight chance of snow on Thursday between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Skies are expected to clear by Thursday night, with sunny conditions and gradually rising temperatures forecast for the weekend, leading to a partly sunny Tuesday with highs near 56°F. Residents are advised to follow the advisory and remain cautious of hazardous conditions until it is lifted.
