More than 60 dogs and puppies, along with horses, ducks, geese, and chickens, were seized from a Ballinger residence yesterday after Runnels County deputies served a search-and-seizure warrant. County officials said the animals were crammed into overcrowded, filthy conditions and quickly called in outside animal-welfare partners to help with the large-scale rescue. The operation is part of an ongoing animal-neglect investigation.
According to San Angelo LIVE!, Humane World for Animals (formerly the Humane Society of the United States) assisted the Runnels County Sheriff’s Office at the scene, with responders from Operation Kindness and the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City also stepping in. The outlet reported that deputies served the warrant early Tuesday and removed “over 60 dogs and puppies” from the home, along with multiple fowl and two horses. Video from FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth shows crews carefully loading animals into crates for transport.
As reported by San Angelo LIVE!, responders said the ammonia odor from the property was noticeable even outside. Inside, they described floors and furniture smeared with feces and urine, with many dogs underweight and suffering visible skin issues. Alex Gamez, Texas state director for Humane World for Animals, told the outlet, “The moment you walk in, it hits you like a wall,” and praised deputies for stepping in when it was clear the situation had gotten out of control. Runnels County Sheriff Carl Squyres told the publication the county did not have the resources to manage a rescue of this size alone and thanked the national and regional groups for backing his office.
Partners, Triage, and the Broader Shelter Strain
Large multi-animal rescues like this one are logistical marathons, requiring coordinated triage, transport, and housing so every animal can get a veterinary exam and immediate care away from the scene. Humane World for Animals has documented how packed shelters and nationwide veterinary shortages are making those efforts tougher, slowing down everything from basic medical work-ups to long-term placement. That ongoing strain is a big reason county agencies lean on national organizations and partner shelters when dozens of animals have to come out at once.
What’s Next for the Animals and the Probe
Officials said the seized animals were being taken to undisclosed locations for full veterinary exams, treatment, and temporary shelter while the neglect investigation plays out, according to FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth. As of that report, authorities had not announced any arrests or criminal charges and asked anyone with information to contact the Runnels County Sheriff’s Office. County and rescue officials indicated that medical rehabilitation and eventual placement will likely unfold in stages, relying heavily on foster networks and partner organizations.
Residents looking to pitch in are being encouraged to connect with local animal-control or support partners. Operation Kindness and Humane World for Animals both maintain donation and volunteer portals that help cover medical care, transport, and foster placement in large-scale rescues. Authorities have not released the exact property address while the investigation remains active.
