Local libraries and health organizations are joining forces to tackle heart disease in Rowan County, where it was the leading cause of death in 2025. An event tomorrow at the Rowan Public Library System's Headquarters branch in Salisbury will mark the collaboration's launch, complete with blood pressure stations and health resources. Melissa Oleen, RPL Director, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, "The library is glad to connect its community members with free access to blood pressure monitoring resources," according to an article on Rowan County's official website.
The initiative, which sees the American Heart Association and Rowan County Public Health working hand in hand, will also include the addition of themed kits to the library's collection that patrons can check out for home use, as heart disease remains a significant threat due to its often-silent symptoms, it's critical to promote regular monitoring for early detection and help people manage a treatable condition, emphasizing the importance of this new approach, Allison Nelson, Vice President of American Heart Association’s Community Impact for the Greater Charlotte Market, stated in a Rowan County newsflash, "Health equity isn’t just part of our mission — it’s the heartbeat of it," and by making these resources accessible, they aim to empower personal health management.
This weekend’s event, open to all, starts at 11 a.m. and features a ribbon-cutting and refreshments, followed by public access to the blood pressure kiosks until 2 p.m., Children and families can also enjoy a special movement storytime; there's a “Medicare 101” presentation for those curious about health care coverage later in the day, To find out more about the initiative and the event schedule, interested individuals can visit Rowan County’s coalition to Support Heart Health.
Following the event, each of RPL's branches in Salisbury, Rockwell, China Grove, and Cleveland will have a blood pressure monitoring station for patron use during operating hours, offering a critical service since knowing one's blood pressure is a straightforward yet potent defense against heart disease, Amy Smith, Rowan County Public Health’s Education Specialist, acknowledged the simple strength of awareness by stating, "When you know your numbers and adopt a healthier lifestyle, your quality and quantity of life can improve," as mentioned in the county's publication.
