A gas leak in Washtenaw County prompted local authorities to close the intersection of Ellsworth Road and State Street. This incident, which took place yesterday, saw the involvement of police and emergency responders, who managed the potentially hazardous situation, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security issued a UM EAlert at 5:35 p.m. advising people to avoid the area due to the gas leak. Officials confirmed the incident took place shortly before 5:42 p.m., causing significant property damage to several cars. Luckily, there were no injuries reported, but residents and drivers were urged to avoid the affected area until it was deemed safe.
Contrary to initial information suggesting an explosion, subsequent clarification revealed that the situation involved a ruptured gas line rather than a fiery blast, as CBS Detroit indicated. DTE Energy identified a third-party contractor's accidental impact with a gas line as the cause of the incident. The police further informed that following the incident, "fire crews are monitoring the air quality," while DTE took measures to address the leak, ensuring public safety.
The closure of Ellsworth Road spanned between State Road and South Research Park Drive, necessitating detours for eastbound and westbound traffic along the Pittsfield Township-Ann Arbor border, according to a statement by the Pittsfield Township Police Department, obtained by MLive. By 8 p.m., gas monitor readings did not reveal any current public safety hazard, and fire suppression was not necessary. Still, residents have been advised to await updates on the situation and expected road reopening through various channels, including social media, demonstrating the interconnected role of public agencies and digital platforms in crisis management.
