A Homeland Security Task Force in South Texas says agents hauled in more than 1,200 pounds of methamphetamine that traffickers allegedly tucked into a commercial lettuce shipment, calling it a major multi-agency score in a corridor known for massive drug loads at the border.
According to DEAHouston, the HSTF-South Texas investigation, led by DEA San Antonio, FBI San Antonio, and the SATX Police HIDTA, uncovered the narcotics concealed among the salad greens. The post added that “Seizures like save countless lives.”
Produce concealment at Pharr follows a pattern
Smugglers leaning on the produce aisle is nothing new in South Texas. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr International Bridge intercepted about 1,153 pounds of suspected meth hidden in a lettuce shipment in November 2025, as reported by the San Antonio Express-News. In January 2025, CBP announced it seized nearly 2,379 pounds of meth concealed in a tomatillo shipment at the same crossing, per MySA.
How inspectors find illicit cargo
Agencies say front-line officers rely on non-intrusive imaging, canine teams and targeted secondary inspections to flag suspect loads before opening them up for hands-on searches, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Officials credit that mix of tech, dogs and old-fashioned scrutiny with multiple large seizures at South Texas ports of entry in recent months.
What comes next
The social media post on the latest bust did not include details about arrests or suspects, and authorities say the matter remains under investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas has previously taken similar produce-related cases to court, noting that pallets of lettuce, tomatillos and other cargo can conceal massive quantities of fentanyl or meth and that prosecutions can follow, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Officials say stopping bulk shipments before they reach U.S. streets remains a top priority for task forces in South Texas, and that more details on the seizure are expected as the investigation moves forward.
