Families at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School say they were caught off guard this month when they learned that a longtime teacher and coach had been accused of sexually assaulting a former student, triggering a police investigation and landing the staff member on administrative leave.
Student's account and police probe
Speaking with WTOP, 22-year-old Rashad Williams said he was 17 when the alleged assault happened in July 2020 at the coach’s home. Williams told the outlet the encounter “traumatized me, genuinely traumatized me,” adding that he “froze up” during the incident.
The Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed there is an open investigation that dates back to last summer, and authorities have not announced any charges.
School response and supports
In a letter to families, the principal wrote that “an allegation of sexual misconduct has recently been made against a staff member at Banneker High School” and that the employee “will not report while this matter is under review.”
WTOP reports that DC Public Schools said it “is required to maintain confidentiality regarding personnel matters” and that the district handles accusations of this kind “with the utmost seriousness.” According to the outlet, the school has offered counselors and other mental health support to students while the case is under review.
Banneker's profile and community reaction
Benjamin Banneker Academic High School is a selective International Baccalaureate magnet that draws students from across Washington. A profile on DC Public Schools notes that Principal Anita Berger has led the school for years, and the campus is listed on the school’s own site at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Shaw.
Within that tight-knit community, families say the allegation and the abrupt notice from the school have been jarring, arriving with little warning and raising urgent questions about student safety and transparency.
Next steps and resources
The case remains under investigation by MPD, and officials have not released further information. Investigators and prosecutors will decide whether any charges are warranted.
