Residents of Shaler Township were confronted with an unexpected obstacle early this morning when a sinkhole prompted a partial road closure on Elmwood Drive. The incident, causing unease among those living in the vicinity, was efficiently addressed by township crews who responded to manage the situation. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen something this close,” neighbor Artie Mignella stated in a WPXI interview. He continued to express his surprise, stating, “I woke up this morning, and I said, ‘It shouldn’t be that bad of a day!’, until I got a message that there was a sinkhole that opened up in front of my house.”
The sinkhole emerged along Elmwood Drive between Elfinwild Lane and 161 Elmwood. According to Shaler Police, the sinkhole was temporarily covered with a metal plate, which allowed the road to quickly reopen with single-lane restrictions to safely streamline the early morning traffic. This immediate action taken by the crews ensured that essential traffic, including school buses, was able to continue to move, albeit cautiously, through the area. Details of the closure were shared by KDKA Radio, whose report noted that the sinkhole was first reported around 9 a.m.
While the cause of the sinkhole has not been definitively determined, the township’s Director of Public Works mentioned aging infrastructure as a likely contributing factor to the collapse. The area has been made temporarily secure, but township crews plan to execute more permanent repairs, which will include replacing storm sewer pipes to mitigate the risk of future incidents.
Further actions to fix the underlying issues will take place following a thorough assessment by the township engineers. Shaler Township Public Works crews have made promises to not only cover the hole but also engage in a meaningful remedy that will prevent such disruptions in the future.
For continued updates on road closures and repairs, residents are encouraged to follow local township communication channels.
