Two 22-year-old men were robbed at gunpoint and had their car taken in a brazen early-morning carjacking in Honolulu, leaving one victim injured and the suspects still on the loose.
The holdup happened around 1:30 a.m. Monday, when two masked men confronted the victims, demanded their belongings and the keys to their vehicle, then took off in the stolen car. Honolulu police say detectives are investigating, but as of now there have been no arrests.
Police: Victim Hit With Gun, Suspects Wore Ski Masks
According to Hawaii News Now, both victims are 22 years old, and one of them was struck on the head with the butt of a handgun during the confrontation. The outlet reports the two suspects were wearing ski masks when they demanded personal property along with the car keys, then fled in the victims’ vehicle.
Police told the station that no arrests had been made as of publication, and detectives are still trying to track down leads.
What Charges Could Follow
Under Hawaii law, a theft that involves force or the threat of force can be charged as robbery in the first degree, and taking or operating someone else’s car without consent can qualify as unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, both felony offenses. See Hawaii Revised Statutes §708-840 and Hawaii Revised Statutes §708-836 for the statutory definitions.
Prosecutors would likely factor in the use of a firearm and the reported injury to one victim when deciding what charges to file if suspects are caught.
