Sly Fox Brewing Company's South Side pub at The Highline is calling last call on Wednesday, with little explanation and even less fanfare.
The brewery announced the shutdown in a brief statement that thanked staff and regulars but did not offer any reason for the decision. The tone was grateful, not gloomy, but it still leaves a lot of South Side beer fans wondering what went wrong.
As reported by WPXI, CEO John Giannopoulos said the company was "incredibly grateful" to guests and staff, praising their dedication for bringing "energy to the space every single day." The station also noted that Sly Fox's downtown Taphouse at The Point will remain open.
Highline Outpost Poured Its First Pints in 2022
The Highline location was a relatively new addition to the Sly Fox footprint. It opened in the summer of 2022 as the brewery's Pittsburgh brewing operation, featuring a small brewhouse and an outdoor patio, according to Sly Fox Brewing Co. The company pitched the South Side spot as a complement to its downtown taproom and other regional pubs, not a replacement for its older locations.
January Health Inspection Triggered Consumer Alert
The pub's short run was not without turbulence. An inspection on Jan. 8 led the Allegheny County Health Department to post a consumer alert for the Highline site, listing 21 violations. The department's food-safety page cited issues including "too many to count" rodent droppings, soiled food-contact surfaces, and the lack of a certified food-protection manager on site.
The problems were not permanent. The alert was removed on Jan. 16 after the facility documented corrective steps, according to the county's inspection report.
Highline Space Now Pitched to the Next Tenant
While Sly Fox prepares to exit, the space itself is already being shopped around. A commercial listing on CREXi labels the property at 46 S. 4th St. as "Former Sly Fox Brewery Sublease."
Patch reported that broker Legacy Realty Partners is marketing the Highline spot as a 5,922 square foot former brewery space and noted that the brewery equipment is for sale, a sign that the next occupant may not necessarily be a brewer.
Brand Keeps Other Taps Flowing
For now, this looks like a targeted exit, not a full retreat. Sly Fox still lists its downtown Taphouse at The Point on its website, along with other Pennsylvania locations and hours. That points to the closure affecting only the Highline outpost while the rest of the brand's operations continue to run.
It has not been an easy stretch for the company overall. The brewery was ordered to pay over $184K for federal wage violations in November 2024, according to Hoodline.
Now, with the Highline pub preparing to pour its last pint and the building marketed for sublease, the only open question on the South Side is who, if anyone, will move into that riverside space next.
