An early-morning walk in Sunset Park turned violent Thursday when a 28-year-old man was struck by a stray bullet as he stepped out of a building on 48th Street, according to police. The shooting happened just after 6 a.m. in front of 214 48th St., where a gunman opened fire toward a nearby group and a round hit the passerby in the leg. Emergency crews rushed him to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, and authorities say he is expected to recover. Officers stayed on the block, taping off the area and canvassing for clues.
As reported by News 12 Brooklyn, investigators say the shooter ran westbound on 48th Street and was last seen in a black jacket, black T-shirt, black sneakers and blue pants. Police sources told the station the wounded man was not the intended target and that multiple shots were fired toward an unknown target outside the building.
Police search and how to help
Detectives with the NYPD began knocking on doors in nearby buildings and are reviewing surveillance footage as they chase down leads. Anyone with information is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit an anonymous tip through the department's Crime Stoppers portal, according to the NYPD.
Stray bullets and community concern
Episodes where bystanders are hit by errant gunfire continue to rattle Brooklyn neighborhoods, with residents often telling reporters they feel on edge afterward. In a similar case last summer, CBS New York spoke with a witness whose family member was struck by stray gunfire. "I do feel unsafe here," the witness said.
No arrests had been announced when News 12 Brooklyn published its report, and detectives urged anyone with video or eyewitness information to step forward. The investigation remains active, and officials say they will update the public as new details emerge.
