What should have been a quiet Sunday afternoon turned into a nightmare for one east Charlotte family, after a woman was fatally shot during a dispute at the Peppertree Apartments on Feb. 8. Relatives say they are now focused on healing after 22-year-old Jordan Symone Davis was shot in the head and later died at a hospital. Police have arrested 23-year-old Nasani Amur Raley, who is charged in Davis’ killing.
Officers responded to the complex around 2 p.m. on Feb. 8 and found Davis suffering from a gunshot wound. MEDIC rushed her to a hospital, where she later died. Court records show Raley called 911 after the shooting and told the operator that Davis tried to grab her gun, according to WBTV.
Family reaction
A relative told WSOC that Jordan “smiled no matter what was going on” and was known for looking out for the people around her. As investigators sort through what led up to the shooting, family members say they are pouring their energy into memorials and leaning on each other to get through the loss.
Investigation and charges
Police detained Raley at the scene, then booked her on a murder charge. Officers also accuse her of drug-related offenses, including possession with intent to distribute marijuana and maintaining a vehicle used for selling narcotics. A judge denied bond during Raley’s initial court appearance, according to WBTV.
Safety measures at Peppertree
In the days after the shooting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police set up a temporary security tower in front of the Peppertree complex off Central Avenue, an effort to reassure residents while detectives continue their work, WSOC reported. Some neighbors said the equipment is an unsettling sight, but many also said they welcome the extra patrols as the investigation moves forward.
Citywide context
The killing comes at a time when, on paper, Charlotte has been seeing fewer violent crimes. CMPD’s 2025 public safety report shows a 21% drop in violent crime and a 13% decrease in homicides compared with 2024. The department credits proactive enforcement and community programs for the improvement, according to the CMPD report.
How to help
Detectives say the case remains active and they are still asking for the public’s help. Anyone with information can share tips with Charlotte Crime Stoppers or CMPD’s tip line.
