Over a year after a series of burglaries shook a Northwest community, the Metropolitan Police Department has reported a significant development in the case. The suspect in question, 64-year-old Bernard Wood, of no fixed address, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses stemming from the 2024 incidents. The arrest, made on February 3rd, 2026, brought closure to the burglary and theft that took place on separate dates, September 12th and 13th of 2024.
According to a release from the MPD, the first incident involved forced entry into a garage located at the 2200 block of California Street, Northwest, at around 8:13 p.m. The thief made away with property, but not without leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. The following night, just hours later, an establishment in the 2700 block of P Street, Northwest, was also burglarized. Money was stolen from the register before the suspect fled, the creeping hours of the morning did little to cloak his crime.
Efforts to identify and apprehend the culprit continued until recently, when Wood was taken into custody. Law enforcement's persistence paid off when the DC Superior Court issued an arrest warrant, resulting in charges that include Burglary Two, Destruction of Property, and Theft Two. After over a year of investigation, the community impacted by these offenses can finally take the first step towards justice and perhaps, peace of mind.
