For a short stretch on Tuesday, getting into Froedtert Hospital was a little trickier than usual after a suspicious package sparked a police response on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus in Wauwatosa. Pedestrians were briefly rerouted, and staff along with security steered people through alternate entrances so investigators could get a clear look at the item while medical care continued as normal, as reported by FOX6 News.
Wauwatosa police told FOX6 News that “the MRMC campus remains open, and patients, team members, and visitors are being directed through the Specialty Clinics entrance.” Police also told FOX6 that the investigation was underway and that no additional details were available.
Campus Access And What We Know
Froedtert is the academic medical center on the MRMC campus, which includes several hospitals and specialty clinics that share patient access points and parking. According to Froedtert & MCW, the campus is designed with multiple entrances and a connected Specialty Clinics building, giving staff options to manage arrivals when something disrupts the usual flow. Patients with scheduled appointments were advised to follow posted signs and listen to directions from hospital staff to reach their care with as little delay as possible.
How Authorities Typically Handle Suspicious Packages
When someone reports a suspicious package, it often triggers a multi-agency response that can look dramatic even when it turns out to be harmless. Local fire department HazMat teams and specialized police units are commonly called in, and federal partners may get involved if mail or unknown powders are suspected. Recent Milwaukee-area responses have frequently included the Milwaukee Fire Department HazMat unit and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with several situations ultimately deemed non-hazardous after testing, according to TMJ4. While that work is underway, investigators often block off sidewalks and restrict access, which can slow down traffic and foot movement around the scene.
Advice For Patients And Visitors
The MRMC campus remained open during the response. If you have an appointment, officials urged you to call your clinic or the hospital’s main line before heading in and to be ready for staff to direct you to a different entrance if needed. The Froedtert & MCW website lists maps and contact numbers for clinics and the main hospital, and local news outlets are expected to provide updates as investigators finish their work.
