Residents across Tampa Bay are bracing for a cold snap, with the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay Ruskin issuing multiple weather advisories, including a freeze warning and a wind advisory. According to NWS, the freeze warning remains in effect until 10 AM EST Sunday, indicating sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees. Accompanying this, a cold weather advisory also remains in effect, cautioning of very cold wind chills as low as 22 degrees.
In addition to frigid temperatures, northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected. These conditions may make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, and could bring down tree limbs and cause power outages. A frost and freeze warning is also in effect, as conditions could kill crops, damage sensitive vegetation, and affect unprotected outdoor plumbing, according to the Tampa Bay forecast website.
The advisories go beyond sub-freezing temperatures and strong winds. From 1 p.m. this afternoon through Sunday evening, a high surf advisory is in effect, with 5 to 7 foot breaking waves expected. These conditions could create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and cause localized beach erosion. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and keep pets indoors when possible.
As the advisory continues, residents are urged to use caution when traveling outdoors and to wear appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves. The National Weather Service also recommends checking frequently on older family members, friends, and neighbors. A high rip current risk remains in effect from 10 a.m. EST this morning through Sunday evening and could endanger even strong swimmers. Anyone caught in a rip current should remain calm, float if possible, avoid swimming against the current, and move parallel to the shoreline or seek help.
