Tipp City is in shock after a substitute teacher and middle school volleyball coach was shot and killed inside her home during what police are calling an apparent overnight burglary on Monday. The death of the 37-year-old has left neighbors, students and the small Miami County community scrambling for answers and clinging to one another.
Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Cunningham Court at about 2:31 a.m., and the victim, identified by police as 37-year-old Ashley Flynn, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tipp City. Family members were notified and the Miami County Victim Witness Program responded to assist with the care of the couple’s children as investigators began processing the home.
Investigation Under Way
Detectives from the Tipp City Police Department and agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation have been working the scene. Officers deployed police canines and an unmanned aerial system during an early search but did not immediately locate any suspects, according to video coverage by FOX 8 Cleveland. Authorities say the investigation is in its early stages and that evidence is being collected for further analysis.
Community Reaction
Tipp City Schools and Lifewise Academy paid tribute to Flynn, saying she was "known for her beautiful smile, warmth, kindness, and the positive impact she had on so many," and announced counseling resources for students and staff, according to PEOPLE. Local churches and former students also posted condolences online and invited the community to prayer gatherings.
Neighbors told reporters the killing has shaken the neighborhood, with one calling Flynn "full of light," and some residents said they are re-evaluating home security after the attack, per the Dayton Daily News. City leaders have asked the public to avoid speculation while detectives pursue leads.
Police have asked anyone with information or video that could help the investigation to contact Tipp City Police or the Miami County communications center. According to the city, updates will be released as investigators track new leads. In the meantime, neighbors, faith groups and the school community have organized prayer gatherings and informal support networks as Flynn’s family and students grapple with the loss.
