A 35-year-old Toledo man was arrested early last Saturday after authorities say he led deputies and local police on a multi-agency chase through parts of Monroe County and into Downriver communities. Deputies first tried to pull him over at about 3:05 a.m. on North Dixie Highway at Sandy Creek Road, but investigators say he took off instead of sticking around. The pursuit eventually ended near Stoneridge Lane when the suspect’s vehicle broke down, and he was taken into custody on pending charges that include fleeing and eluding and resisting and obstructing.
How the chase unfolded
A Monroe County deputy initially stopped a silver BMW SUV at N. Dixie Highway and Sandy Creek Road at about 3:05 a.m., according to ClickOnDetroit. The SUV briefly pulled over so the deputy could check the plate information, but once that was done, the driver hit the gas and headed north on N. Dixie. Deputies followed until the vehicle crossed the county line, at which point the initial pursuit was called off.
Roughly 45 minutes later, Flat Rock officers spotted what they reported as the same BMW SUV, now southbound on Telegraph Road and rolling on rims with two blown tires, according to ClickOnDetroit. A Monroe County deputy then re-engaged the chase, which moved onto I-275.
Where it ended
The driver exited I-275 at Carleton Rockwood Road and headed east before the BMW finally gave out and became inoperable, coming to a stop near Stoneridge Lane, per reporting by 13abc. Deputies took the 35-year-old into custody without further incident. Authorities are withholding his name until he is arraigned, and Monroe County deputies say the investigation is still active as they work to determine why he bolted from the original traffic stop.
Charges and public tip line
According to officials, the suspect was booked on charges of fleeing and eluding and resisting and obstructing, with arraignment details not immediately available. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7511, per ClickOnDetroit. The sheriff’s office says additional charges could still be filed as the case develops.
