An Irvine woman is facing burglary and elder-abuse charges after an elderly shopper reported her wallet missing while shopping at the Trader Joe’s on Campus Drive last month, according to police. Investigators say the victim’s credit cards were used shortly afterward at nearby retailers, which kicked off a trail of surveillance checks and follow-up work. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody and booked into the Orange County jail on allegations that include burglary and elder abuse.
How Police Say They Traced The Purchases
According to the Irvine Police Department, Crime Impact Unit detectives teamed up with Spectrum Center security to review surveillance footage after the stolen cards were used. That collaboration led them to follow leads into Los Angeles once purchases were flagged at the mall.
Investigators say those efforts identified the suspect as Andrea Maria Cantor Patino, 51, of Los Angeles. The department reported that she was arrested and booked at the Orange County Jail on burglary and elder-abuse counts.
Not An Isolated Incident In The Region
Regional coverage in recent years has highlighted similar distraction-style thefts at grocery stores and shopping centers, where wallets disappear during a quick lapse in attention, and the cards are immediately run at other retailers.
Patch has previously reported on suspects who allegedly used stolen cards at electronics stores after a theft at the same Campus Drive Trader Joe’s. In another case, KSBY detailed a February incident in San Luis Obispo in which a 74-year-old shopper’s cards were charged for thousands of dollars shortly after a wallet was taken at a Trader Joe’s.
What The Charges Mean Under California Law
In California, both burglary and elder-abuse allegations can bring significant consequences. Depending on the circumstances, they may be filed as misdemeanors or felonies, with charging decisions tied to factors such as intent, the value involved, and the extent of harm.
Under California Penal Code 368 and Penal Code 459, convictions for elder abuse or burglary can carry jail or prison terms, as well as fines and restitution, depending on the details of the case and any applicable sentencing enhancements.
Police Safety Tips And How To Help
Authorities routinely urge shoppers to keep wallets and purses zipped, secured, and close to the body, avoid leaving valuables sitting in carts, and quickly alert store security or police if they notice suspicious behavior in the aisles.
As FOX 11 has noted, surveillance video often ends up being crucial for identifying suspects. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Irvine Police Department or refer to the department’s Facebook post for further details.
