Last night's commute turned chaotic for Long Island Rail Road passengers when an eastbound train collided with a vehicle on the tracks near Farmingdale, resulting in injuries and service interruptions. The incident, which occurred at the Little East Neck Road crossing east of the Pinelawn station, was reported by ABC7NY to have happened around 7:15 p.m. yesterday. According to the MTAPD, three adult train passengers sustained injuries, while the vehicle's occupants and train crew emerged unscathed.
Following the crash, service was suspended as emergency crews and LIRR personnel worked to manage the aftermath. "There was over one thousand feet of damage to our track, mainly to our third rail infrastructure," Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free said in a statement reported by News 12 Long Island. Despite the extensive damage, repair crews were able to restore one track by the morning rush hour, a testament to the workers' determination. Meanwhile, affected passengers were provided with alternate bus transportation to reach their destinations.
As of this morning, full service along the Ronkonkoma Branch has been restored, following the completion of rail repairs at approximately 8:30 a.m. This development comes after overnight efforts to mend over a thousand feet of damaged rail infrastructure. A Ronkonkoma commuter, Deanna Reith described the event's impact on her morning commute as "a mess," capturing the sentiment shared by many passengers displaced by the service disruption.
The exact circumstances leading up to the vehicle's presence on the tracks remain under investigation by the MTA police. What is known is that the collision did not result in any injuries to the crew or the car's occupants according to, the MTA. With 40 people on board at the time of the incident, the swift response by emergency services and MTA personnel helped avert a more severe outcome.
