U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy is pushing for a Made-in-America approach to the nation's burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The latest move entails a proposal to ramp up the Buy America provisions—a mandate stipulating federally funded EV chargers to boast a domestic content threshold raised from 55 percent to a full 100 percent. Announced today, this shift is meant to bolster U.S. manufacturing and national security by lessening dependence on foreign-made components.
Consistent with the Trump administration's America First ethos, Secretary Duffy criticized the previous administration, per the U.S. Department of Transportation, "Biden and Buttigieg talked a big game, but their miserably designed program failed to deliver EV chargers and promote domestic manufacturing." As soon as the updated waiver is finalized, the requirements will be immediately applicable, making any federally funded EV charger projects comply during acquisition or installation.
Further detailing the administration's course of action, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Administrator Sean McMaster stated, "The Biden-Buttigieg Administration’s empty promises led to few EV chargers and hurt domestic manufacturing. The Trump Administration is committed to boosting America's industrial base to secure the long-term strength and stability of critical supply chains." These remarks underscore the administration's commitment to revitalizing American industry and safeguarding economic interests.
Backed by a belief that U.S. facilities have the capacity to domestically produce EV chargers, the Administration asserts this incentive for manufacturers will facilitate a swift transition to stateside production. The FHWA's proposal, ingeniously designed, aims to aid American businesses and workers in gaining an edge on the global stage. Citing that industry has had sufficient time to build up the capacity for domestic manufacturing of EV chargers, the FHWA is persuasive in its argument that stronger Buy America provisions are not only feasible but catalytic for industrial growth.
