An Upper Marlboro man is facing charges after an incident early Saturday morning, in which a Maryland State Trooper was struck by a vehicle while conducting a roadside check. As reported by DC News Now, the trooper was outside of his cruiser on Branch Avenue, responding to a vehicle parked in the right lane, when a Ford F-150 collided with the cruiser, subsequently causing injury to the trooper.
The collision, which occurred shortly after 7 a.m. near Moores Road, prompted responders to quickly transport the trooper to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center for treatment. He has since been released. The driver of the Ford was arrested and has been identified as 32-year-old Rayshaud Davon Shield. Despite needing to see a court commissioner, he was initially held at the Prince George’s County Detention Center. The Maryland State Police College Park Barrack, which continues to actively investigate the crash, has charged Shield with suspected impaired driving and other related traffic offenses.
Further details, as provided by FOX 5 DC, state that the trooper's marked patrol vehicle was behind the unoccupied car with activated emergency lights at the time of the crash. Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration contributed to the incident response by assisting with road closures in the area.
Maryland State Police have not yet released additional information regarding what led up to the crash, but the investigation by the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack is ongoing. WUSA9 reports that Shield is currently being held at the Prince George’s County Detention Center on charges that include suspected impaired driving, amongst others.
