Wake County officials are warning residents about a scam involving individuals posing as employees of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. According to a Facebook post, the callers falsely claim that payment is required to obtain a domestic violence protective order. The warning, shared on social media, states that any calls requesting money through phone-based transactions for this purpose are fraudulent.
Officials report that the scam involves demands for payment through mobile apps, gift cards, or other methods that are difficult to trace. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office states that it does not contact individuals by phone to request payment and that legitimate procedures do not require fees to be paid in this manner. Authorities also warn that claims involving a so-called pretrial release program requesting money from family members are fraudulent, and residents are advised to end such calls immediately.
Additional information on identifying and avoiding scams is available through the Wake County Sheriff’s Office official Facebook page. Authorities encourage community members to remain cautious and to verify the legitimacy of any request that claims to involve law enforcement.
