Washington County, Wisconsin, has marked a significant milestone in its initiative to make homeownership a reachable goal for its residents. The Heart & Homestead Earned Down Payment Incentive program recently celebrated a win, with 150 families within the county successfully becoming homeowners. The innovative scheme, which fuses financial support with community engagement, has seen $2,964,530 awarded to these new homeowners, who, instead of paying back in monetary terms, are paying their dues through sweat equity.
The initiative operates by rewarding participants for volunteering and donating their time to local non-profit organizations. As of the fourth quarter of 2025, the program's success was palpable, "Q4, 2025 saw a huge impact across the county and we are so proud of every hour volunteered and dollar donated by our Recipients. Heart & Homestead is a win-win-win for our community!" read the social media post from Washington County.
The program’s success goes beyond helping people buy homes. It reflects the strong community partnerships in Washington County. Homebuyers receive the support they need to achieve homeownership while also giving back by volunteering with more than 80 participating nonprofit agencies.
