A wanted person who barricaded himself inside an apartment at the Webster Apartments in Webster today triggered a heavy law enforcement response and a brief shelter in place at nearby Webster Elementary. Deputies later took the person into custody without incident, the school order was lifted, and officials say the whole thing ended without anyone getting hurt.
Police response and timeline
The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said deputies headed to the Webster Apartments on E C-478 late Tuesday morning while trying to serve several warrants. A significant law enforcement presence moved into the area shortly after 11:15 a.m., and the person inside refused to come out at first.
The standoff did not last long. The individual who had barricaded themselves was taken into custody by about 11:40 a.m., according to FOX 35 Orlando. Deputies reported that the arrest itself was handled without incident.
School precautions
Out of what officials described as an abundance of caution, Webster Elementary, located roughly a mile from the apartment complex, was placed on shelter-in-place status while deputies worked to secure the scene, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office. Students and staff remained inside as law enforcement wrapped up the operation nearby.
The shelter-in-place was lifted after the arrest, and regular school activities resumed. Webster Elementary's website lists the campus at 349 S Market Blvd in Webster, which lines up with its proximity to the Webster Apartments.
