The West Allis Police Department is opening its doors to the community through its latest initiative, the Community Police Academy. This 10-week program offers an intricate look at the inner workings of our local law enforcement and the challenges they face daily. Set to kick off on March 2 and run through May 4, the academy invites residents to engage every Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the police department's assembly room located at 11301 W. Lincoln Ave. Those signing up can eagerly anticipate presentations by various department personnel, including patrol officers, K-9 handlers, traffic investigators, detectives, and SWAT team members, according to an official statement from the city's website.
Participants will have the opportunity to fire a handgun at the police firing range as part of the program, providing community members with firsthand insight into certain aspects of police training and responsibilities. Additionally, local experts will lead a tour of the Water Reclamation Facility on March 22 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., where attendees will learn about water treatment processes and ongoing research conducted in collaboration with OU.
Moving away from law enforcement and public utilities, The Well is hosting a Native Plant Workshop on April 4. This hands-on event, scheduled from 9 AM to 11 AM, is focused on the ecological benefits of native flora and the creation of seed bombs to support our pollinator populations. Attendees will get their hands dirty in the best way possible while contributing to the environment, an endeavor that can be continued at home with the new knowledge and seed bombs acquired. Details on the workshop and how to register can be found on the city's announcement page.
The city will host the eighth installment of Artful Inlets at Rotary Park on April 16–17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., where artists will create public art installations throughout the park. In addition, the Great American Cleanup Kickoff Event is scheduled for April 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Eastwood Park, where volunteers will participate in watershed cleanup activities, including picking up trash and removing invasive species.
