What started as a traffic stop over a red light turned into a 30-mile chase across Harris County, ending with a driver crashing into a Houston home and slamming into a parked car, authorities said.
Neighbors said they heard the impact as Harris County Precinct 2 deputies moved in, secured the area and began their investigation. Officials have not released the driver's name or a list of any potential charges.
Red-Light Run Sparks 30-Mile Precinct 2 Pursuit
Deputies say the chase kicked off when they saw a vehicle blow through a red light and tried to pull the driver over. Instead of stopping, the driver took off, triggering a pursuit that lasted about 30 minutes and covered roughly 30 miles before ending at a residence in Houston, according to KHOU.
Crash Rips Into Home And Parked Car
Precinct 2 deputies report the fleeing vehicle first struck the residence, then hit a parked car, leaving visible damage to the home's exterior and to the vehicle. Local footage from the scene shows debris scattered around and heavy front-end damage to the parked car.
High-Speed Chases Put Bystanders At Risk
Extended police pursuits have led to serious crashes in the Houston area before, fueling an ongoing debate over when officers should keep chasing and when to back off. The Houston Chronicle has highlighted a previous 30-minute deputy pursuit that ended with multiple people hospitalized, underscoring the danger these incidents can pose to people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
KHOU reported that authorities did not immediately say whether anyone was injured or whether the driver had been charged. The constable's office provided the initial account carried in the station's coverage. This story will be updated if officials release additional details or a formal statement from the Precinct 2 Constable's Office.
