Officials have replaced the traffic signal at 75th Street and Greenfield Avenue with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Under Wisconsin law, drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and the RRFB is intended to increase driver awareness when someone is crossing.
According to the City of West Allis release, the change follows a Wisconsin Department of Transportation review of the Greenfield Avenue corridor ahead of a planned reconstruction project around 2030. The review found that some intersections, including South 75th Street, could operate without a traditional traffic signal. Additional studies connected to I-94 planning showed that the signal at South 75th Street sometimes caused traffic backups into the intersection at South 76th Street during peak hours.
Funding for the update comes from a traffic mitigation agreement related to freeway construction. The agreement also includes signal equipment upgrades along Greenfield Avenue, which is often used as a detour during I-94 construction. According to a statement on the West Allis official website, officials will continue to monitor traffic conditions and make adjustments as needed.
