A tragic snowmobile accident in Michigan's Upper Peninsula claimed the life of a 44-year-old woman this past weekend, according to police statements. Last Friday, around 10:32 a.m., while snowmobiling along Trail 417 in Chocolay Township near the Alger County line, the woman reportedly encountered a dip in the trail that led to a loss of control, and both she and her snowmobile exited the path. CBS News Detroit reported the woman received immediate CPR at the scene before being rushed to the hospital, where further attempts at life-saving measures were made, but the woman eventually succumbed to her injuries. The woman's identity has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
WLUC disclosed that Chocolay Township Police are actively investigating the incident, with collaborative efforts by the Marquette County Sheriff's Special Operations and the Michigan DNR. Yesterday's press release noted that Chocolay Township Police arrived on the scene, after being transported there by other snowmobilers, to find that CPR was already being implemented. Despite transferring the woman to a UPHS-Marquette ambulance using the fire department's rescue sled, her injuries proved fatal.
In a separate but equally hazardous event on the same day, an 18-car pileup transpired in Marquette County’s Chocolay Township on M-28 during whiteout conditions caused by blowing snow along the Lake Superior shoreline, as detailed by a report from MLive. The conditions led to a chain reaction collision where vehicles continued to collide at speeds upward of 50 mph. The tally rose to 18 vehicles before the crash's momentum was stopped.
The swift judgment by Chocolay Township Fire Chief Lee Gould to declare the incident a “mass casualty event” initiated an urgent response that brought additional resources to the site. "This action sped up the process of getting more agencies and resources to the scene, potentially saving lives," according to MLive’s report. Despite the severity of the event, which led to multiple hospitalizations, no fatalities were reported, an outcome possibly stemming from the decisive actions of responding officials.
