A love triangle in New Bern took a brutal turn Thursday afternoon when, according to deputies, a 21-year-old woman smashed another woman with a baseball bat inside Sandy Ridge Mobile Home Park, leaving the victim with serious injuries before fleeing the scene with an acquaintance.
According to the Charlotte Observer, the Craven County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as 21-year-old Speciale Sanders of New Bern. She is charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury. Court records cited by the paper state the victim suffered significant trauma from the strike, and that Sanders was also served with existing warrants for misdemeanor larceny and second-degree trespass.
Arrests and charges
Per the Craven County Sheriff's Office, deputies later tracked down two women at an intersection roughly six miles northeast of the mobile home park. Officials say one was booked on the felony assault charge, while the other was arrested on counts of felony possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
How deputies say it unfolded
The confrontation broke out around 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Sandy Ridge Mobile Home Park and stemmed from what investigators described as a "love triangle," according to the Charlotte Observer. The sheriff's office says the suspected attacker and a driver took off in a vehicle immediately after the bat strike, but deputies stopped the car and arrested both a short distance away.
What's next
Sanders is being held in jail on the felony assault charge and remains in custody while prosecutors evaluate the case, according to the sheriff's office. The companion taken into custody was also served with outstanding warrants for felony probation violations, officials said, per the Craven County Sheriff's Office.
