Bear King Brewing, a new beer-and-brand concept that says it will spotlight Black-owned beverage brands, is moving into Columbus' Short North neighborhood and lining up to be the next local player in the area's bar scene. The plan, announced Tuesday, positions Bear King as more than a typical taproom, and the company intends to host rotating brands from Black founders alongside its own small-batch pours. Short North regulars can expect pop-ups, tap takeovers and events aimed at lifting local beverage entrepreneurs while competing for attention in an already busy beer market.
As reported by Columbus Business First, the move to the Short North is pitched as a platform for Black-owned beverage brands rather than a single-brand taproom. The story, by Dan Eaton, frames the effort as a local-first play to give Black founders regular taproom access and retail visibility in one of the city's busiest nightlife corridors.
Local Roots And The Product
Bear King has already been making the rounds across central Ohio through festival pours and pop-up tastings, and its website highlights beers such as "Blackberry Molasses" and "Sunshine" alongside a list of upcoming festival appearances. The brand is listed as Bexley-based and founded by someone identified as Peyton on Untappd, and the brewery's own site includes a Columbus phone number and contact email. The site, however, does not yet publish a fixed Short North address.
Why The Short North Matters
The Short North has long been a magnet for restaurants, bars and brewery pop-ups, and Columbus's craft beer ecosystem gives new concepts multiple ways to reach customers. As noted in an Ale Trail overview from Experience Columbus, festivals and taproom programming help newer beer brands find traction. Bear King's explicit focus on elevating Black-owned beverage makers could be the differentiator it needs in a crowded market.
So far, neither the Business First report nor the brewery's public pages list a permanent Short North opening date or exact address. Instead, they emphasize the platform concept and on-the-ground festival appearances. The Untappd and company listings give a sense of Bear King's product and origin, but the Short North will be the real test of whether the concept can convert platform ambitions into a steady neighborhood draw.
