Walnut Bend Elementary in west Houston spent part of Tuesday morning on edge after a bomb threat led school officials to place the campus on a "hold." HISD police quickly arrived and began sweeping the building while teachers kept students in their classrooms and instruction continued. School leaders stressed that the move was precautionary and told families they would be updated as more information becomes available.
Campus on Hold While Police Sweep Classrooms
In a letter to parents, Walnut Bend Elementary said the campus was placed on "hold" at 8:48 a.m. and that "students and staff are asked to remain in their classrooms in order to keep the hallways empty." The notice explained that classroom learning would continue, but students would not be able to change classes while HISD police carried out a "systematic sweep" of the campus. As reported by ABC13 Houston, school officials said they would keep monitoring the situation and provide further updates.
District Threats Under Scrutiny and Enforcement
HISD has dealt with multiple threats to campuses this school year, with district leaders at times ordering holds or full lockdowns while law enforcement cleared buildings. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the district has increased security and assigns investigators to reported threats, and officials have said they pursue prosecution when threats cause fear. Those investigations have at times resulted in arrests, according to the paper.
What Families Are Being Asked To Do
Parents are being urged to monitor official HISD and campus communications for any changes to dismissal or pickup and to follow guidance from school staff. Walnut Bend's website lists contact information and resources for families and encourages checking district messages for updates. School officials reiterated that the hold was a precaution while authorities swept the campus and that they will share information as it becomes available; families can contact the school through its site with specific questions.
Texas Law And Potential Criminal Charges
Under Texas law, knowingly reporting a false emergency or making threats that trigger an emergency response can lead to criminal charges. Threats may be prosecuted as a terroristic threat under Penal Code §22.07 or as a false alarm or report under §42.06, depending on the circumstances and intent. The statutes outline the elements and possible penalties that can apply when a hoax or credible threat forces a police response.
