A JetBlue flight from Boston's Logan International Airport to Vero Beach turned into an unplanned marathon on the tarmac Saturday after a reported bomb threat left passengers stuck on board while authorities swept the plane from nose to tail.
Video shared with local media shows an explosive-detection K-9 circling and sniffing the aircraft as crews checked the cabin and luggage. Passengers were later told the call was not considered “viable,” but officials said safety protocols required a full, by-the-book inspection before anyone could get off.
According to Boston 25 News, travelers described being kept on the plane for hours while law enforcement repeatedly apologized and carried out a slow, methodical search of the aircraft. The station published video it received showing the K-9 team working near the jet as crews inspected both bags and the cabin.
Plane Searched In Vero Beach
JetBlue recently rolled out nonstop service between Boston and Vero Beach as part of a broader expansion of its Florida routes, the airline said when it announced the new flights. That schedule tweak has boosted seasonal traffic to the Treasure Coast and turned Vero Beach into a regular winter destination for Logan departures, according to the carrier's release.
Airport Response
Vero Beach Regional Airport, which handles both general aviation and scheduled commercial traffic, notes in its public information that it works closely with local law enforcement on security responses. When a threat comes in, local deputies and explosive-detection teams routinely sweep aircraft and baggage so operations can resume once the scene is cleared.
Similar Incidents This Month
The Vero Beach scare follows other recent JetBlue-related security responses. On March 1, deputies in Broward County cleared and searched a JetBlue plane at Fort Lauderdale after a reported bomb threat and arrested a passenger, local reporting shows. Coverage by JetBlue bomb scare at FLL and by Local 10 underscores that airports are treating any threat call as a serious situation.
Legal Consequences
In Florida, knowingly making a false report about a bomb or other explosive is a felony under Florida Statute 790.163. Convictions can bring prison time, fines, and restitution to cover the cost of the emergency response. Prosecutors decide whether to file charges after investigators complete their sweep and follow-up interviews.
Boston 25 News reports that it has reached out to JetBlue for comment, but the airline had not issued a public statement at the time of that report. This story will be updated as officials or the carrier release additional information.
