Guerrero is headed to federal prison for more than a quarter century after a string of gunpoint robberies that included a Bronx ambush leaving one man dead, according to federal prosecutors. The U.S. Attorney’s Office framed the sentence as a response to a pattern of violent stickups that put residents and small businesses on edge.
“Guerrero carried out a series of gunpoint robberies, including a Bronx ambush that left a man dead,” U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said, adding that Guerrero is now in prison for 27 years, which is where prosecutors say New Yorkers want him, in a post from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
Case Background and Plea
Court reporting shows Guerrero entered a guilty plea in May 2025 and was set for sentencing. The matter, listed as USA v. Guerrero, et al., 1:23-cr-411, was handled in the Southern District of New York, according to Inner City Press.
Bronx Ambush That Killed One Victim
Prosecutors told court reporters they “lured two victims to a location in the Bronx,” and one of those victims, identified as Johnny Gaston, was shot and killed during the robbery, court coverage indicates. The surviving victim and other evidence tied the ambush to a broader spree of armed robberies that federal prosecutors used to argue for a lengthy prison term, as reported by Inner City Press.
Federal Sentencing Context
Federal law includes statutes that impose mandatory minimum consecutive terms for using a firearm during a violent crime, which can substantially increase total prison time. The text of 18 U.S.C. 924(c) lays out those minimums and explains why federal charges often produce longer sentences than state cases; see the U.S. Code.
The sentence was handed down in federal court in Manhattan, closing this phase of the prosecution. Court records and the U.S. Attorney’s post on X are the primary public sources of the disposition so far.
