A 16-year-old boy was fighting for his life Monday evening after a gunman opened fire inside a residential tower at the Sheepshead Bay Houses in Brooklyn, hitting the teen in the chest. The shooting happened around 5:56 p.m., and medics rushed him to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Neighbors described a crush of police cars and ambulances swarming the NYCHA complex as officers locked down the area and began searching for the shooter. Police said a man wearing a blue hat was seen bolting from the scene on foot.
According to the New York Daily News, the gunfire erupted inside a tower on Avenue X near Brown Street and left the teen with a single chest wound. Medics rushed him to NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, where he was listed in critical condition, police told the paper. As of Monday night, authorities had not announced any arrests.
Police Search for a Suspect
Officers canvassed the building and nearby yards looking for a man described by police as wearing a blue hat and last seen running from the scene. Detectives began pulling surveillance footage and knocking on doors to interview residents, while officials asked anyone with photos or video to come forward. At the time of reporting, no one was in custody and the search was still on.
Where It Happened
The Sheepshead Bay Houses is a NYCHA development that stretches from Avenue V to Avenue X in southern Brooklyn. NYCHA lists multiple residential towers in the complex, which includes many six-story buildings and more than a thousand apartments. That kind of maze-like layout can slow down canvassing and evidence collection for investigators trying to retrace a suspect's steps. NYCHA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
What Comes Next
Detectives with the NYPD were continuing to work the case and asking residents to share any video or eyewitness information, according to the New York Daily News. Police said they would be combing through building surveillance and cellphone footage and following up on any tips that come in. Local tenant leaders said they plan to push NYCHA and city officials for a sit-down on safety measures once the immediate crisis passes.
Community Response
Residents at the complex said the shooting left them rattled and asking for more visible security after yet another act of violence in the development. Sheepshead Bay Houses has been the scene of previous shootings covered by local outlets, including ABC7 New York, and community groups have repeatedly called for stepped-up patrols and resources. For now, neighbors say they are waiting for answers as detectives work to track down whoever pulled the trigger.
