A late-night burst of gunfire in downtown Milwaukee left a 47-year-old man dead near West Vel R. Phillips Avenue and West State Street on Saturday, according to police. Officers were called around 11:34 p.m. and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made, and Milwaukee police say they are actively searching for suspects as the killing joins a string of violent episodes the department is investigating this month.
Police Ask For Help
According to CBS58, Milwaukee police said the shooting happened at about 11:34 p.m. and confirmed the victim died at the scene. Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Milwaukee Police tip line at (414) 935-7360 or Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS, or to submit tips through the P3 Tips app. Detectives are canvassing the downtown area and reviewing evidence as they work to identify suspects and determine a motive.
Two Separate Shootings Overnight
Local station TMJ4 reported that police spent Saturday night working two separate shootings. The first, at about 8:48 p.m., left a 15-year-old injured and hospitalized. The later downtown shooting, on the 1100 block of West Vel R. Phillips Avenue, left the 47-year-old victim dead. Authorities told reporters the two incidents are not believed to be connected. Police are urging anyone who may have recorded cellphone video to keep it and share it with investigators.
Downtown Safety In Focus
The fatal downtown shooting lands amid renewed scrutiny of safety in Milwaukee’s city center after several high-profile incidents in recent years. Coverage by TIME and other outlets of the 2024 death of D'Vontaye Mitchell outside the Hyatt Regency sparked debate about private security practices and policing downtown. City officials and community leaders have said those cases highlight how crucial it is for witnesses to come forward and for authorities to be transparent as investigations move forward.
Milwaukee police say the investigation into Saturday’s killing remains active and again urged anyone with information to contact detectives. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers or the P3 Tips app. As CBS58 notes, investigators are working to identify suspects and review any available video or physical evidence. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
