San Antonio police say a quick stop at a Stone Oak daycare turned into an easy target for car thieves on Tuesday, ending with three arrests and a pile of recovered vehicles.
According to SAPD, a string of recent vehicle thefts included one outside a daycare at 18858 Stone Oak Parkway, where thieves allegedly watched for drivers who left their cars running “just for a minute.” Investigators say they later tracked the stolen vehicles to a residence, where several people were detained without incident. The investigation is still active as detectives work through evidence.
KENS5 reports the suspects arrested were identified by police as Ashton Walker White, 25; Stephanie Alvarado, 41; and Rodolfo Martinez, 44. Investigators told the station they tracked the suspects and the vehicles to a home and detained several people outside the residence without any struggle.
The thefts fit a larger citywide pattern
What happened in Stone Oak is hardly a one-off, according to local data. Vehicle theft has been a stubborn, citywide headache. As outlined by KSAT, nearly 19,000 cars were reported stolen to SAPD over a 12-month period in one recent analysis. Police say a frustrating number of those cases involve cars left unlocked or with keys sitting inside, making “crimes of opportunity” like this one all too common.
Investigation and next steps
SAPD’s vehicle-crimes detectives are handling the case and will determine what charges to file as they interview witnesses and process evidence tied to the run of thefts. Officials say the work is ongoing, and more information is expected once detectives finish sorting out who did what and when.
How drivers can reduce risk
Law enforcement and local reporters repeat the same basic advice for a reason: it works. Police urge drivers to avoid leaving vehicles running and unattended, always take keys and lock the doors, stash valuables out of sight and, when possible, park in well-lit areas.
KSAT offers an interactive map of reported thefts along with prevention tips that residents can use to stay on top of trends in their neighborhoods. Anyone with information about the Stone Oak daycare theft or related incidents is asked to contact SAPD or Crime Stoppers.
