An afternoon commute turned tragic Wednesday in Philadelphia’s Eastwick neighborhood, where a multi-vehicle crash involving a SEPTA vehicle left one person dead and several others injured, police said.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the collision happened around 4:18 p.m. at Island Avenue and Buist Avenue and involved a 2019 Honda HR‑V, a black Jeep Compass and a SEPTA vehicle. All three were traveling northbound on Island Avenue when, police said, the Honda struck the rear of a SEPTA bus and the Jeep then slammed into the Honda.
The passenger in the Honda was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m., authorities said. The Honda’s driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Two people riding the SEPTA vehicle were also hurt, while the Jeep’s driver was not injured, according to police. A SEPTA spokesperson told NBC10 Philadelphia the vehicle was operating on the T5 Line at the time of the crash.
Where the T5 Runs
The T5 line serves the Elmwood and Island Avenue corridor and terminates near 80th Street at Eastwick, with surface tracks running down portions of Island Avenue, according to SEPTA. That layout keeps trolleys and car traffic in close quarters along Island Avenue, where the mix of roadway and track can turn any collision into a particularly dangerous situation.
Investigation Underway
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit is handling the probe. The identities of those involved have not been released and the crash remains under investigation, NBC10 Philadelphia reported. Investigators have not yet shared additional details about the victims or indicated whether any charges might follow. For now, they are focused on reviewing the scene and vehicle positions to piece together exactly what happened.
Local Context
Fatal crashes involving SEPTA vehicles are relatively rare but not unheard of. In January 2024, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on a deadly collision in Kensington involving a SEPTA bus. When serious incidents like this occur, they typically trigger detailed crash-unit reviews and public statements from SEPTA and police as investigators work to reconstruct the events and identify witnesses.
